Fasting, Cake and Cannon Kauman
by hans@acehdigest
I remember my childhood between darkness and light. One that I can remember the wonderful atmosphere of Ramadan, in the evening after the break, with joy especially on the first day of fasting, when waiting for the first tarawih. As a child I only remember when we started that night will get a "gift" of serving the cake after terawih prayers. As soon as prayer was over, we sat around the walls lined the mosque in the back room near the porch, because it was so tradition, and Khadim mosque would walk around to share our two pieces of cake per person, while occasionally prohibits noisy children because sometimes there is a scramble . That is done every night for 30 days during the month of fasting. The cakes are donated by residents in the vicinity of the mosque.
This is their way of encouraging children to continue terawih and create a festive atmosphere of the mosque. Just imagine if we were not there, the children who are sometimes noisy and running around the mosque before or after tarawih when cakes were distributed, the mosque will feel lonely and quite. It became one of the unique and beautiful memories we enjoy ramadan as special days.
Shopping streets or wait for a square meal break and buy a variety of taste also become memories that often make the chest tightness with emotion and delight. Plus my mother is always spoiling us by buying my favorite boiled chicken or fish. I even my mother has always been a shopping aide, while occasionally helping carry groceries, if too much to in tote my mother.
But from everything which is also unique in karesidenan Kebumen, is a marker of time to break the siren that preceded the cannon boom. Ancient cannon right in front of the mosque would be rung Kauman as a marker of time begins to break the fast. And that is sounded every evening throughout the month of fasting without absent despite the rain. I've wondered where a cannon ball that much, but sounded every day during the fasting month but when we no longer war, and the bullet did not know come from where?. But that's war or no war, cannon still boomed every evening with a puff of smoke thick in the air as a sign of breaking fast.
I remember we were all gathered in front of the house waiting for the seconds it. When the cannon booms then appear black smoke in the air shimmered for a moment, we will immediately rush to their homes, to break the fast. Habits we did not wait to break in front of the dining table but rather the front yard of the house. Incidentally front of our house is open space with no trees and the most appropriate direction of cannon fire. Exactly the point where the cannon is fired so clearly without having to stand too we can see dark black smoke cannons so bullets fired. Some neighborhood kids are also waiting in front of our house is not fenced. Day suddenly becomes night quickly, and we were preoccupied with the excitement of breaking the kitchen table.
I had a very curious and hoping to witness the cannon sounded, I want to see how the cannon ignited and took out a very loud bang. Although we would be late breaking due to the distance almost Mosque Kauman approximately two kilo meters away from the house. If we are there to be prepared with supplies so that we can break their fast at the mosque or in the field of the square in front of the mosque, without any need to hurry to go home, even we can pray in the mosque old pilgrims there are very sacred in our area. Maybe we could call it a highway or a mosque grand mosque kauman Kebumen, mosques amongst children and smart people, because even now is still a boarding school and the afternoon chanting children.
I recall having seen directly, that's right cannon placed at page facing the north front of the mosque opposite the qiblat. Cannon facing slightly upwards to get the right point shot in the air. Mosque and the cannon was rather dark green and shiny, the color of a typical traditional past as an ancient mosque aka old school with a swimming ablution and stacking shapes that are also very distinctive roof joglo house.
Fasting is always providing wonderful memories that we can not forget, especially the booming cannon break their bookmarks. Meriam is authentic and there is his name, usually named with the name like a human name like Kyai Kanjeng or anything. Just beautiful and a great name, whether it is also why guns should be named like human beings?. But that tradition, which is sometimes strange and incomprehensible, especially by us who were children, as well as the reasons why must the cannon sounds, why not with sirens wrote, whether it is the tradition of royal relics, or the trustees, to give the attraction for anyone including those not fasting, such as the unique mission?, I do not know.
