Bentuknya mirip cendol, tapi ada bedanya, cendol biasanya campurannya banyak, ada tape, roti, kacang merah yang direbus, santan, dan tak lupa gula “gila” cair. Tapi sebaliknya dengan dawet cukup dawet sendiri ditambah santan dan gula gila tadi. Maksudku dawet berisi dawet?, yang dibuat dari tepung ketan?, sebenarnya aku tidak tahu apakah yang hijau itu dawet dan dibuat dari tepung ketan, direbus dan menjadi kenyal berwarna hijau karena diberi pewarna dari daun pandan.
Yang aku tahu, dulu dawet dijual dengan dipikul, disimpan dalam guci atau kendi dari tanah liat, sehingga membuat dawet tetap sejuk, dingin dan segar tanpa perlu menggunakan es batu atau dimasukkan dalam kulkas. Biasanya aku membelinya di pasar kebumen, karena disana biasanya ibuku membelikanku waktu aku menemaninya belanja. Aku ingat wajah manis ibuku ketika mengajakku minum dawet, membiarkan aku minum duluan, sambil memandangiku sambil tersenuyum dan merasa bersalah, karena aku menjadi kepanasan dan kehausan sehabis keliling pasar. Ibuku suka beli dawet karena satu alasan, kata ibu sambil membantu orang, kasihan penjualnya sudah tua, ibuku orangnya agak perasa, gampang sedih kalau melihat orang tua jualan, malah kadang-kadang tak suka menawar. Aku kemudian suka mengikut sifat ibuku itu terutama ketika aku besar kemudian.
Penjualnya orang karang sari, berambut putih dan orangnya ramah. Tidak tahu kenapa para penjual dawet hanya orang tua, mungkin yang muda-muda tak lagi mau menjual minuman yang terkesan murahan.
